Waverly’s History

Founded in 1829, Waverly—now the seat of Humphreys County— was developed as an important center for river and railroad commerce, linking rural Middle Tennessee to larger regional markets. Its historic downtown and courthouse square reflect the town’s role as a center of trade, transportation and civic life throughout the 19th century.

Historic Sites & Landmarks

Today, landmarks such as the Butterfield House, Fort Waverly and the Humphreys County and Civil War Museum interpret Waverly’s past. Additional markers across the county—including Fort Hill, Reynoldsburg, the Humphreys County War Memorial and the Battle of Johnsonville—form a connected landscape of sites exploring local heritage and Civil War history.

Tennessee River, Buffalo River & Kentucky Lake

The Tennessee River, Buffalo River and Kentucky Lake anchor outdoor recreation in Waverly, offering boating, fishing, paddling and water sports throughout the year. Created by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Kentucky Lake is one of the largest man-made lakes in the country, spanning more than 160,000 acres and over 2,000 miles of shoreline. Families can enjoy public swimming areas, while anglers target crappie and bass in quiet coves and open water, drawing major tournaments such as the U.S.A. Bassin series at New Johnsonville.
